FRIM or Forest Research Institute of Malaysia is a must for all nature lovers who are in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. It is located in the suburb city of Petaling Jaya, approximately 16km north west of the capital city. It was founded in the year 1929 and is one of the leading institutions in tropical forestry research both locally and abroad. This 600 hectares tropical forest contains a wealth of flora and fauna with approximately 15,000 species of plants though for a layman in botanic, all of them look like greeneries.

As you enter FRIM, you will be amazed by the arboretums or living museum of trees. Walk through the many nature trails and discover the many species of flora and fauna here. Remember to go to the information counter for a briefing and purchase some brochures on the plants that you will encounter before you move out to explore the surrounding area.

Shrouded with mystical legends and folklore, Gunung Ledang continues to charm and intrigue locals and visitors alike. According to the legend of the Princess of Gunung Ledang, the sultan demanded that the beautiful princess present him with seven jars of women's tears, seven trays of mosquitoes' hearts and seven bowls of the sultan's son's blood. Unable to meet these impossible requests, she fled to the mountain and continues to live in a hidden cave.

The mountain is also ideal for a myriad of outdoor activities with challenging mountain trails; icy waterfalls; and exotic flora and fauna including many species of birds. At the relatively flat summit, which is 1,276 metres above sea level, a panoramic view of the Straits of Malacca and Sumatra coastline can been seen on a clear day. Also, a popular picnic spot is the Sagil Waterfall, at the base of the mountain.

Getting there

By road
From the North-South Expressway, the turn-off point is 25km after Ayer Keroh. Head towards Tangkak. Proceed along the pastoral Route 23 for another 6km, past Sagil town, before turning left onto a road in a rubber plantation and proceed another 1km. From here, the route to the foot of Gunung Ledang should be visible.

By Bus or Taxi
A bus service is available to the resort from Tangkak, about 16km away. Taxis can also be hired from Tangkak.

I went to Pantai Indah Seaview Resort on 27-28 June 2008 for vacations. Located beside Pantai Remis, Kuala Selangor you can get there about 15 minutes from Klang Town along the way to Kuala Selangor.

The resort offers 2 or 3 bedrooms apartments as low as RM100 per night per apartment equipped by air-conditioning, tv, kitchen and also bath tub. Every apartments have balkoni.

This is my second time visit to Masjid Kristal (Crystal Mosque). The mosque located at Pulau Wan Man where by visitor can visit via bus or boat from Kuala Terengganu. Even the infrastructure still in progress the Mosque is now open to visitor.

While Masjid Kristal is free for visitors, Taman Tamadun Islam' that located beside the Mosque, visitors have to pay RM20 for adult and RM10 for children.

Taman Tamadun Islam is unique because visitors can see few replica of mosque from all over the world here like Masjidil Haram, Masjid Nabawi, Masjidil Aqsa and Masjid Instanbul.

When I went to Batu Pahat during Chinese New Year, it's hard to find hotel. After two hours searching finally we found Novo Park Hotel with only few room left.

Located beside most controversial hotel Katerina Hotel (Chua Soi Lek hotel??!!) the room look very nice and the staff very friendly and helpful. But, with the price at RM113 per night, the room is smaller than other hotel we went before, but overall we satisfy with our night stay. This also our first experience we stay at room with no windows...haha.

Kenyir Lake

Malaysia is one of the exotic land lies that at the heart of Southeast Asia. The country is located between 1-degree latitude to 7-degree latitude and 99 degree longitude to 120-degree longitude. To the south lies Singapore and to the north is Thailand as our neighboring country. To the west of the Strait of Malacca is Sumatra and Southern part of Borneo (Sarawak and Sabah) is Kalimantan.

Terengganu facing towards South China Sea is among the 13 states in Malaysia. It has the longest crystal sandy beach in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Well known for her emerald sea, golden sunlight and coral island rich in marine life. Bordered by Kelantan to the northern part and Pahang to the western and southern part.

Kenyir Lake became one of the most magnificent tourist sports in Terengganu as well as in Malaysia. Kenyir luxurious forest is located in the district of Hulu Terengganu, which lies at a longitude of 102 degree 40 minutes and 4 degree and 40 minutes in latitude. It is believed that the rain forest is the world oldest tropical rainforest. The forest also serves as a part of Malaysia National Park.

Kota Belanda / Dutch Fort

At Teluk Gedung lies the 330 year old stone foundation of a Dutch Fort built in 1670. It was one of the Dutch strongholds against pirates and local Malays. Actually, during the Dutch occupation in the 17th century, tin supplies from Pangkor and the mainland were stored for protection in this fort. As time goes by, the locals were unhappy with the treatment of the Dutch. So, they managed to destroy the fort sometime in 1690. This is not the end because the Dutch then returned in full force to rebuild the fort.

After which, 60 soldiers were commissioned to protect the fort until 1743, when it was finally abandoned after a local warrior, Panglima Kulub, and his followers attacked it. Later in 1973, the National Museum undertook its reconstruction to restore as much as possible the remains of the fort for the benefit of tourists. Located at Teluk Gedung village, slightly south of Pulau Pangkor. Just ask the village folks for directions and they will be just too glad to oblige.

Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM) or formerly known as Islamic University College of Malaysia (KUIM) is the 12th Public Higher Education Institution (IPTA) in Malaysia. KUIM was approved by the Cabinet on 11 June 1997 and made public on 13 March 1998. KUIM started its operations in January 2000 at 5th Floor, Faculty of Islamic Studies Building, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi. The first enrolment for KUIM began on 18 June 2000 in our temporary location at Institut Professional Baitulmal (IPB), Kuala Lumpur. In January 2002, KUIM moved to another temporary campus in Tower A and B, Persiaran MPAJ, Pandan Indah, Kuala Lumpur. Currently, KUIM is operating in stages at a permanent campus in Bandar Baru Nilai starting 15 July 2005. KUIM was officially upgraded to USIM on 1 February 2007, in line with the government’s aim to upgrade the development of higher education to an international level.

Cherating is located about 45minutes drive from Kuantan. A state where religion is held close to it's people's hearts, the Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque, or also referred to as the Floating Mosque, is one of the icons of Islam in the state. Built from an idea birthed by the late Sultan of Terengganu, Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, this mosque was named after his mother, Tuanku Intan Zaharah binti Almarhum Tengku Seri Setia Raja.

The mosque is located in Teluk Ibai, just over 4km away from Kuala Terengganu town centre, quite close to the beautiful beach of Terengganu's coast. The white structure of the mosque gorunds covers and area of roughly 5 acres and serves a number of villages nearby. Construction of the mosque began in 1991, designed by celebrated architect, Raja Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad.

In the days before, there were roads, the Terengganu River was the only means of communication for the people living in its upper tributaries. These upper tributaries, the Berang, Tersat, Telemong, Kerbat and Cacing, formed a network of settlements going back to ancient times. One of the earliest finds of human settlement is at Gunung Biwas on the Cacing River. This is the site of one of the earliest human settlements on the Peninsular. The Batu Bersurat, an Islamic stone inscription indicating early Islamic influence, was found near Kuala Berang.

Up and down, river traffic has diminished today but there is still regular cross-river traffic at a few places particularly at Kuala Telemong and in Kuala Terengganu town. The cross-river boat service in Kuala Terengganu links the town centre with Pulau Duyong in the middle of the river. Commuters find the service useful notwithstanding the recent completion of a bridge spanning the river and linking the town centre, Pulau Duyong and the village of Seberang Takir across the river.

Other than the Kenyir Lake, with its visitor facilities, and Pulau Duyong, famous for its boat building industry, another attraction associated with the river is the Sekayu waterfall near Kuala Berang, Kuala Terengganu is the taking-off point to nearby offshore islands such as Pulau Redang and Pulau Kapas.

Bukit Puteri was built to defend the Rulers of Terengganu from attacks by the enemies. Bukit Puteri is easily accessible as there are steps leading to the top. Bukit Puteri was said to have originated as a place of residence for Puteri Bunian. However, the princess left Bukit Puteri when the local residents borrowed her cutlery and did not return them to her. According to legend, this hill was opened by a chieftain from Johor named Tuk Raja Menteri who came to Terengganu to install Sultan Zainal Abidin I as the first Sultan of Terengganu.

During the year 1830, there was a struggle for power among the two royalty of Terengganu that is, Tengku Mansur, the Sultan of Terengganu who was conferred the title of Sultan Mansur Shah II and Tengku Umar, the Yang Di pertuan Besar. Tengku Umar had built a fort at the top of Bukit Puteri for defence. This fort was built of bricks and cemented with honey, lime and egg white. However Bukit Puteri was captured by Sultan Mansur Shah II and Tengku Umar was forced to flee to Besut. Bukit Puteri then came under the control of Sultan Muhammad I who ascended to the throne when Sultan Mansur Shah II passed away. However, Sultan Mahmmud was not able to defend Bukit Puteri when it was attacked by Tengku Umar army. Finally, Tengku Umar recaptured Bukit Puteri again.

A few historical artifacts still exists on Bukit Puteri till this present day. Among them are a big bell, cannon, a flag pole, light house, graves and a defence wall. However, long time ago there were many cannons at Bukit Puteri. The cannons were believed to have originated from Spain, Portugal and the Malay States and were given names such as Seri Jamlor, Seri Buih, Seri Johor and Laila Majnun. The bell that still exists today was built during the reign of Sultan Zainal Abidin III in the year 1908. The bell was made from yellow copper, the circumference and height of the bell were 228 centimeters and the weight was 175 kilograms. The bell was sounded when there were rampage, fire or enemies attacking the state. It was believed that the bell was guarded by a boy from the royal family. The boy job was to sound the bell if any emergency or natural disasters occurred.

A cave known as Gua Puteri can also be found here. It was used as a place to keep the gun powder, stone and iron bullets. The flag pole that is on top of Bukit Puteri was used to raise the royal flag when there were any royal ceremonies held. The weight of the flag pole was around 18 meters high. The lighthouse on the peak of Bukit Puteri functioned as a guide for fishermen and sailors that siles into Kuala Sungai Terengganu. During the reign of Tengku Umar, he built a palace called the Green Palace at the foot of Bukit Puteri but was burned down in 1882. He built a new palace near the site of the Green Palace and was named Istana Maziah which still exit until today.

Nowadays, Bukit Puteri is used as a firing range for cannon when royal ceremonies are held. Besides that, Bukit Puteri has been developed into a tourist attraction.

Terengganu : Istana Maziah

Istana Maziah is the official Terengganu sultan's palace. It is located near Bukit Puteri in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, Malaysia.

The distinct deep yellow structure of the Istana Maziah royal palace is hard to miss if you're walking around Kuala Terengganu. Located right next to Bukit Puteri, Istana Maziah is believed to have been constructed during the reign of Sultan Zainal Abidin III in 1897 to replace the Istana Hijau, which was burned down during World War II.

Istana Maziah is the venue for royal birthdays, weddings, conferment of titles and receptions for local and foreign dignitaries. This distinct building is a product of the blend between modern and traditional architecture, which reflects the artistic skills of the Terengganu people. 20 craftsmen using limestone mixed with clay, coarse salt, egg yolk and honey constructed it. The palace has tall shuttered windows resembling those of a French chateau.

Located in front of Istana Maziah, Dataran Maziah is a mini-park beautifully adorned with landscapes of shrubs, trees and paved walkways. In the centre of the park, stands an impressive replica of Betel Chewing instruments such as Gobek Sireh and Kacip Pinang.

NASI DAGANG TERENGGANU

Nasi Dagang is a rice speciality of Terengganu. The Dish is made by cooking rice and glutinous rice together, to which is then added coconut cream once it is cooked. It is eaten with it's own specially made side dishes of tuna curry and a light vegetable pickle. Simplicity is its essence

Recipe of Nasi Dagang

Ingredients·

300g nasi dagang rice or substitute with 200g·
good grade Siamese rice mixed with 100g glutinous rice·
1 grated coconut to extract 3/4 cup thick coconut milk and 3/4 cup thin coconut milk·
1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds ( halba )· 2 cloves garlic, sliced finely·
3 shallots, sliced finely· 2cm young ginger, sliced finely·
1/2 tsp salt

Method

Wash rice well and soak for five to six hours.
Drain well, then steam rice for 20 to 25 minutes or until half-cooked.
Stir in thin coconut milk and continue steaming for 15 minutes until rice is nearly cooked.
Combine thick coconut milk, shallots, garlic, ginger, fenugreek and salt. Stir into the cooked rice then steam once more for 10 to 15 minutes or until rice is properly cooked.
Serve rice with kari ikan tongkol or tuna.

State Mosque (Masjid Negeri)

Surrounded by the beautiful Shah Alam Lake Gardens, The Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque, one of Shah Alam's most famous figure, is one of the symbols highlighting supremacy of the Islam and Muslim sovereignity in Malaysia.

It is also the largest mosque in Malaysia and one of the largest in South East Asia. It was completed in 1988 and officially opened on the 11th of March of the same year.With its large blue and white dome, it is actually one of the biggest dome in the world.

The Sultan, representing the religious head in Selangor, followed the sunnah(tradition) practised by the Prophet Muhammad and initiated the construction of this historic building.

After Shah Alam was declared the capital state of Selangor ( Kuala Lumpur became the Federal Territory of Selangor instead) in 1974, the idea to build a mosque to represent Shah Alam sparked. The Sultan wanted the mosque to have a traditional identity. The location has to be right as well, as it needs to be at a quiet and serence place.

Election in Malaysia : Phantom buses stopped

Two buses, containing mostly women passengers, have been quarantined at the Pekan Ijok police station amidst allegations of phantom voting.

The buses were blocked by hundreds of PKR supporters at Bukit Badong, following a half-hour stand off which began at 4pm.

During the stand-off, opposition supporters had blocked the buses from leaving the area.

The opposition group, comprising mainly PKR and PAS supporters, had used a four-wheel drive to block the path of the buses.

Melawati Hill / Bukit Melawati, Kuala Selangor

Melawati Hill is located in the coastal town of Kuala Selangor, a 30-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur. In the late 18th Century, the second Sultan of Selangor had a fortress constructed on Melawati Hill to protect the state from intruders.

The hill provided a vantage point to monitor ships in the Straits of Malacca. Even with a strategic hold, the Melawati Fort yielded to the Dutch cannons.

It was again destroyed during the Selangor Civil War, when warring factions fought for tin-rich lands. All that remains of the fort now are its cannons, its original foundation stones and fabled execution block. The landscaped hill offers a panoramic view of the Selangor coastline.

Visitors will be delighted to watch the free-roaming Silverleaf Monkeys in the area. The adults are dark-haired with a tinge of silver, while the young ones are a bright orange. Gentle and adorable, they graciously wait for bread or fruits from visitors, unlike the mischievous Long Tail Macaques.

Other attractions here are a lighthouse, a royal mausoleum and a quaint rest house.

The 88-storey PETRONAS Twin Towers, developed as an integral part of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) project, house PETRONAS' new corporate headquarters.

The PETRONAS Twin Towers rise like sentinels in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Costing a whopping US$1.2bn and uniquely designed by Cesar Pelli & Associates, it rises to 1,483ft (451.9m) in height and is all of 33ft higher than the Sears Tower.

Cesar Pelli, former dean of Yale University's School of Architecture, also designed Canary Wharf in London, and the World Financial Center in Manhattan, New York City.

The floor-plate of the Tower is designed based on geometric patterns common in architecture of Islamic heritage. It is composed of two rotated and superimposed squares with small circular infills. These geometric figures have been described by architects as symbolising unity, harmony, stability and rationality - all important principles of Islam.

The North South Expressway (NSE)

The North-South Expressway (NSE), a 772-km expressway extending from the border of Thailand in the north to the border of Singapore in the south, plays a major role in serving the needs of the road transportation industry for the coming decades. Constructed in phases over a period of seven years (from 1988 to 1995), the North-South Expressway was completed 15 months ahead of schedule and was fully operational by February 1994. It was officially opened on September 8 1994 by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, signalling the coming of age of Malaysia's road transportation system. The North-South Expressway starts at Bukit Kayu Hitam and ends in Johor Bahru, linking all major cities on the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia between Thailand and Singapore. In addition, three other adjoining expressways complete the total 847.7 km of inter-urban toll highways referred to collectively as the North-South Expressway under PLUS' concession, namely the New Klang Valley Expressway, Federal Highway Route 2 and the Seremban-Port Dickson Highway.

My trip to Penang Hill on 13 March 2007 on School Holiday. So many people there during holiday but we enjoyed the trip. We bought train ticket at 4.00 pm for trip at 5.30pm. Even we and have to wait 1 and half hour, but we enjoyed the scenery and the freshness up there.

Those who want to get there, you better spend until night because the night view of Penang town are very beautiful. Don't worry last train trip going down is at 11.30pm. Hope you all enjoyed my photos and videos here.

Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera)

Malaysia's first hill station, Penang Hill is 830 meters (2730ft) above sea level, visitors can ascend to the top by either hiking up or by the funicular railway which has been operational since 1922. Apart from the cool, refreshing climate and the fantastic view at the summit, visitors can also view the picturesque bungalows, a beautiful flower garden and a bird park.

There are bungalows for rent and a hotel for those who want to stay for more than a day. Visitors can also indulge in refreshments and snacks at a convenient tea kiosk located on top of the hill.

There is a good walking track up the hill. It takes 4 hours to reach the top and is recommended only for the more energetic. The jungle trail begins at the 'moongate' at Jalan Air Terjun, approximately 300m from the Botanical Gardens entrance.

The most popular way up the hill is via a funicular train, which takes about half an hour. Walking up the hill takes about four hours.

The funicular rail service begins at 6.30am and ends at 9.30pm

Fare: RM4.00 adults & RM2.00 children.

I think so. This is largest Tang Lung i ever saw at Suria KLCC, Kuala Lumpur. Too bad, this picture not large enough when i posted into this blog.

Aquaria KLCC This “ ocean of discovery ” is unveiled at the Aquaria KLCC right in the heart of the city. It is the first commercial aquarium in the Federal capital and a wonderful place to spend the school holidays with the family.

It's a RM60 million aquarium featuring some 5,000 aquatic and marine animal exhibits of over 150 different species from Malaysia and around the world – some caught, some sourced and some given. Boasting of an area spanning two levels and covering over 5,500 sq m, making it the largest in the world, the Aquaria has 19 tanks with various environments to keep and display fishes from various parts of the world.

Themed around two of the world ’ s major rainforests – Malaysia and the Amazon – Aquaria KLCC exhibits terrestrial, fresh water and marine creatures and it is also the first in Southeast Asia to exhibit the rare Sand Tiger Sharks from South Africa.

According to Aquaria KLCC public relations officer Amanda Chong, they have only been in business for two months and the response has been overwhelming. There will be at least 1,000 visitors per day and up to 5,000 visitors during public holidays.

The aquarium is also home to monkey-eating catfish from Endau Rompin, sharks from Singapore and the endangered fresh water tortoise called “ Chitra-chitra ” which were saved from the cooking pot.

A lot of visitors come here to learn more about the marine life and see what we have to offer, the feeding times are extremely popular with the crowd. Sometimes, there are divers get into the tanks to feed the fishes and marine life, and visitors crowding around the tanks during that times.

Chong says the aquarium also features interactive information and discovery kiosks, which are thematically linked to the aquarium.

Fully loaded with information on the existing exhibits at the aquarium, the information kiosks even provide real “ live ” video footage of some of the most fascinating exhibits.

Batik - The Malaysian Handcraft

The term “Batik” is an Indonesian-Malay word (Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malay are the official languages of Indonesia and Malaysia and are linguistically similar). Batik has come to be used as a generic term which refers to the process of dyeing fabric by making use of a resist technique; covering areas of cloth with a dye-resistant substance to prevent them absorbing colors. The technique is thought to be over a thousand years old and historical evidence demonstrates that cloth decorated with this resist technique was in use in the early centuries AD in Africa, the Middle East and in several places in Asia. Although there is no sure explanation as to where batik first was “invented”, many observers believe that it was brought to Asia by travelers from the Indian subcontinent.

Despite the fact that batik may have originated elsewhere, most observers believe that batik has reached its highest artistic expression in Indonesia, particularly in Java. The art of Batik was later spread to the rest of the Indonesian archipelago and to the Malay Peninsula where the popularity of the cloth led to the establishment of many other production centers. Batik has become a very central means of artistic expression for many of the areas of Asia and a deeply integrated facet of Asian culture.

Much of the popularity of Batik can be tied to the fact that the batik technique offers immense possibilities for artistic freedom as patterns are applied by actual drawing rather than by weaving with thread. Another factor in its popularity is the fact that it is so durable. The colors in Batik are much more resistant to wear than those of painted or printed fabrics because the cloth is completely immersed in dye and the areas not protected by resist are allowed to absorb hues to the extent that the colors will not easily fade.

As we noted at the first, batik is now a generic term. Because of the popularity of batik designs, many batik patterns are used in a wide variety of fabrics. Many fabrics are called batik although they were not made in the resist method. Most purists believe that such cloth has a batik like design but is not true batik which is confined to fabrics made through the application of the originally conceived Javanese methods of resist dyeing. Modern designers in Indonesia, Malaysia and to a lesser extent Thailand, the Philippines and elsewhere often use batik design elements and often the actual batik clothe in their clothing and accessories. Although most batik fabric is now decorated and tailored by machine, there still remains a considerable market for high-quality, hand-made batik.

Marang fishing village, located at the mouth of the Marang River,is a nice, relaxing spot for visitors and travellers, as described by some visitors of Marang, the village has a nice, tranquil feel to it. The residents of Marang village are nice and friendly. Also, inorder to get to Cotton Island(Pulau Kapas), then most visitors would have to stop by at Marang village, then hop onto a boat to the island.

Try to conjure up an image of a very peaceful village with beautiful wooden houses, children playing games such as hopscotch and marbles, cows grazing in the field, swaying coconut trees, a fresh, cool breeze and a spectacular curve of white, sandy beach.

However, Marang village is different now, as concrete buildings have now replaced the once traditional wooden houses, thus lost it's once tranquil feel to it. The villagers however, are trying to return everything as what it was once. There are still plenty of village activities for visitors to participate in. Marang has not lost it's touch just yet.

Although lemang is available all year round, it is nonetheless an exceptionally special dish during Hari Raya open house. Although the preparation seems simple enough, cooking lemang requires an open area with plenty of ventilation - which is why people just prefer to buy lemang rather than attempt to make it themselves.

About two days or so before the end of Ramadhan (the fasting month), vendors can be seen cooking and selling lemang by roadsides. Lemang is usually 'bought by the bamboo' and should be left unopened until it is ready to serve.

To serve, break open the bamboo and remove the leaf-wrapped rice. Cut into 1 inch thick slices and serve at room temperature with beef rendang, beef floss (serunding) or thick curries.

The Malaysia Agriculture Park is the first and so far the only agro-forestry park in the world. Initiated by the Agriculture Ministry in 1986, the Park displays the various agricultural forms and modes used in the country againts a splendid backdrop of virgin jungle.

The main objective of the 1,295 hectare park is to serve as a permanent exhibition centre for the development and progress of agriculture in the country. It also aims to act as a referral and research centre for the various fields of agriculture such as farming, animal husbandry and fish rearing. Ultimately, it is hoped that the Park would provide the inspiration and the impetus for the growth and development of the country's agricultural sector.

Its beauty and uniqueness have prompted the Ministry to open up the Park to the general public so that they too may savor the splendor and the wealth of the nation's agricultural heritage. The response to the move has been so encouraging that the Park no longer confines itself to just serving the local populace but caters for a fast growing number of foreign tourists as well. The development of the Agriculture Park along its agro- forestry concept is an ongoing process. In due course, more attractions will be developed in accordance with the master plan for the Park. This Park will not escape the natural changes wrought by time and the development designed by man. The planners of the Agriculture Park, however, want to direct the changes that will be complementary and not contradictory to nature.

The forested areas of the Park will be allowed to mature undisturbed, consequently towering trees with large girth and solid branches will dominate the forest. Standing more than 150 feet above the ground and supported by massive buttress roots, the majestic dipterocarps will crowd the forest where once only small trees reigned. The secondary forest of Bukit Cahaya Seri Alam will mature and stabilize into a "primary" forest.

Zoo Melaka with an area of 21.2 ha is situated in Ayer Keroh, which is a well known tourism destination in Melaka. The zoo was established in 1963 and originally under the Melaka State Government but its management was taken over by The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) in 1979. The zoo total annual operating expenditure is about RM2 million. The zoo employ 66 employees in four major divisions, namely Administration, Veterinary, Curatory and Zoo Extensions.

Zoo Melaka has progressed rapidly to be the second biggest zoo in the country. The number of exhibits have increased five-fold since 1979. At present, there are a total of over 1200 specimen made up of 215 species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians in the zoo. The total annual visitation is about 400 000 people and more than half are people from Melaka and the neighbouring states. The major attractions of Zoo Melaka are the Sumatran Rhinoceros, Malayan Gaur, Serow and the Indochinese Tiger. In line with the current zoo development, Zoo Melaka adopted an Open Concept and maintains the natural green environment.

Facing the Sultan Abdul Samad Building is Dataran Merdeka or Merdeka Square, an immaculately-turfed 8.2 hectare area of historical interest.

A 100 metre-high flagpole rising from Merdeka Square is the tallest in the world, and marks the spot where the Malayan Flag was hoisted on August 31, 1957 signifying the independence of the country from British rule.

You may able to see the Malaysian Armed Forces and Royal Malaysian Police bands take turns to perform at the square every third Saturday of the month from 5pm to 6pm.

The Dataran Merdeka (Merdeka Square), a field fronting the Royal Selangor Club, resounded to the cries of "Merdeka" on that night and Malaysias converge on the square each year to relive the moment the country gained its independence.

Formerly known as the Padang, the field was extensively used for cricket, hockey, tennis and rugby matches until the mid-nineties when the whole area was rebuilt to accommodate an underground parking lot and shopping, restaurant, complex. Today, it is still used for cricket matches.

he Tudor-style Royal Selangor Club built in 1910 rests on one corner of the square, where KL's elites meet. You may see a large video screen displaying religious messages and advertisements here.

The Club served as a social centre for Kuala Lumpur¡¦s British residents; its doors are now open to anyone who can afford the membership fees. In keeping with die-hard customs women are still not allowed entry to the bar, except by invitation.

At the opposite end of the square is an inviting spot where visitors can relax amid soothing rushing waters of fountains, elegant colonnades and colourful beds of zinnias and marigolds.

Beneath the square is Plaza Putra, an underground food, leisure and entertainment complex.

As you travel along Jalan Parlimen and towards the Lake Gardens, close to Parliment House stands the National Monument or Tugu Negara.

It is a great bronze sculpture erected to commemorate the soldiers who gave up their lives in the triumph during World War II and the Emergency (1948-60).

It was designed by the famous sculptor, Felix de Weldon, who also designed the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington. The 15.54 metre high bronze monument depicts seven soldiers symbolising the seven qualities of leadership.

Delight In The Cool Comfort Of A Hilltop RetreatFraser's Hill derives its name from one of the more colourful characters in Colonial history, James Louis Fraser, an adventurer and fortune hunter. Stories about his life, included rumours that he managed an opium and gambling den that was frequented by miners. However, in the early 1900's, J.L. Fraser vanished, never to be heard from again. Later, in 1917, a couple of clergymen rediscovered Fraser's Hill on one of their wanderings. Realising its potential as a Colonial hill station, they managed to garner enough support from the authorities to built a road linking the Kuala Lumpur - Bentong / Kuantan Highway to Fraser's Hill.

When the popularity of Fraser's Hill grew, the expatriate community at that time took to building holiday bungalows on the higher slopes to get away from the unbearable heat of the lowlands. Fraser's Hill at one time was the playground of rich miners and planters from the surrounding areas. One of Malaysia's earliest Golf courses was constructed on Fraser's Hill in 1925 by engineer Frank Hemmant.Cool throughout the year at average temperatures of 58'F to 65'F, the attraction of Fraser's Hill as a tourist resort has not diminished through the years.

Today, Fraser's Hill is popular as a site for company retreats and weekends. The golf fanatic will find enough here to occupy his days and non golfers may just decide to while aways their time horseback riding or simply strolling down the picturesque lanes that weave through the green countryside. The fresh mountain air is cool and invigorating and when dusk falls, the mist that blows in brings back memories of a simple, gentle era.

Melaka is located on the Western Coast of Peninsular Malaysia facing the Straits of Melaka, about 147 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur and 245 kilometers from Singpore. Melaka is actually found sandwiched between the states of Negeri Sembilan and Johor. It can be reached by excellent roads from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Internally it is serviced by a very good network of roads leading to all the historical places of interest. It covers and area of 658 square kilometers and is divided into three districts namely Alor Gajah, Melaka Tengah and Jasin.

Melaka was founded by Parameswara (or Raja Iskandar) the last Malay ruler of Temasik (ancient Singapore) in 1396 when he and his followers retreated up the straits to Muar, then to Sungai Ujung before settling at Bertam near the estuary of Melaka River.Finding the place of strategic location, he decided to make a permanent settlement there, naming it "Melaka" after the name of the tree he leaned against.

The Melaka Sultanate occupies a special position in the history of Malaysia. Its inauguration marked the beginning of the emergence of a new Malay empire. The birthplace of the Malay Sultanates and Malaysia's historic city, Melaka provided the stage on which the Portuguese, Dutch and English played out their roles in shaping the history.

Melaka emerged as a strong maritime trading state under the industrious Parameswara and his chiefs. Melaka also began to be noticed by Muslim traders from West Asia and India, who until that period, had been concentrating their activities in Aru, Pedir and Pasai en-route to the East, especially China. Because of its strategic location straddling the Straits of Melaka, it thrived as a port-of-call and a centre of entrepot trade with ships and merchants from China, Japan, India, Arab and South Africa.

In 1511, it fell to the hands of the Portuguese, followed by the Dutch in 1641 after a fierce battle. In 1795, Melaka was given to the British to prevent it falling to the French when the Netherlands was captured during the Napoleonic Wars. It was returned to the Dutch in 1818 under the treaty of Vienna but was later exchanged by the British for Bangkahulu, Sumatra. From 1826 onwards, the British East India Company along with Singapore and Penang governed it, under the Straits Settlement administration in Calcutta.

The Dutch, who held Melaka for over a century, left many fine buildings marking their heritage. The most imposing relic of the Dutch period is the Stadthuys, a strikingly pink town hall which is today the oldest Dutch building in the Far East. Right next to it stands the bright red Christ Church, constructed with pink bricks imported from Holland and covered with local red lacerite. Today, these buildings together with the ruins of the Portuguese built A Famosa and St. Paul's Church are the most prominent reminders of the Europeans' presence in Melaka.

After World War II, anti-colonial sentiment bred in the country among the nationalists, the result of which was the proclamation of Independence by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, Malaysia's first Prime Minister, at the Padang Pahlawan (Warrior's Field) at Bandar Hilir, Melaka on 20 February 1956.
