Taiping Zoo is special in its own way. It is located in a lovely natural setting in Taiping Lake Gardens close to the foot of the Larut Hill (Maxwell Hill). The beautiful natural setting with streams, lakes and abundance of flora gives the zoo a unique advantage of being able to use nature to its best.

'Taman Mergastua Sultan Idris Shah' or the Taiping Zoo, which is located at the Lake Gardens in Taiping, is the only Zoo in the North of Peninsular Malaysia. Covering an area of 34 acres, the Taiping Zoo has embarked on an expansion programme which includes the building of new "Open Concept" animal enclosures. These enclosures which take into consideration the natural habitat of the respective animal, has been favourably received by the public-both for its inherent beauty and thoughtful design.

Taiping Zoo is currently home to more than 180 species of animals totalling - 1,300 individuals. These include Tigers, Lions, Elephants, Hippopotamus, Giraffes, Hornbills, Orang Utans and others. Furthermore, attempts to breed these animals have been very successful. This has seen the proliferation of such animals like the Malaysian Tiger, Lion, Siamang, Deer, Nilgai, Night Heron and many others.

This is my first post after this blog has been recovered.

Last weekend (2nd August 2007) my family and I went to Sg Klah Hot Spring Park. This hot spring park located at Sungkai, Perak and you can get there about 1 1/2 hour only from Kuala Lumpur.

The special about this park, it suittable for all whereby its has hot and cold pool. The park also equipped by personal hot pool pond for those who coming for treatment, spa room, massage room, therapeutic room and more.

This is the most popular seaside resort of Pangkor. It has been described as the biggest swimming pool in the world. The water is shallow and crystal clear, offering endless hours of fun and frolic in the sunkissed sea along the vast coral reef. It is accessible by road from Pangkor Town. The 2 km crescent shaped beach offers a host of facilities such as sailing, fishing, snorkelling and wind surfing (available at Sea View and Beach Hotels) making Pasir Bogak Beach a more popular recreation spot for the local population.

Nipah Bay (Teluk Nipah)

Further down the road, is the increasingly popular Teluk Nipah. Accommodation here caters much to the middle to lower-ranged budgets and can be a little dissapointing to those who have something of a romantic notion of island getaway in mind. Chalets, restaurants and motels line the streets and even the small alleyways and during the peak seasons, it's jam-packed with tourists. The main road lies between the beach and the motels and chalets so don't expect to get any rooms on the beach itself.

Giam Island can be seen from Teluk Nipah Beach. From the beach, you can also take a short boat ride to the nearby islands of Pulau Giam and Pulau Mentaggor and if you're really for some exercise, you can rent kayaks for a paddle out to these islands.

A short distance from the fort is Batu Bersurat (Sacred Rock). On this massive rock, drawings of a tiger mauling what is believed to be a child can be found. Local history has it that the boy was the son of a Dutch dignitary who disappeared and was believed to be attacked by a tiger.

Kota Belanda / Dutch Fort

At Teluk Gedung lies the 330 year old stone foundation of a Dutch Fort built in 1670. It was one of the Dutch strongholds against pirates and local Malays. Actually, during the Dutch occupation in the 17th century, tin supplies from Pangkor and the mainland were stored for protection in this fort. As time goes by, the locals were unhappy with the treatment of the Dutch. So, they managed to destroy the fort sometime in 1690. This is not the end because the Dutch then returned in full force to rebuild the fort.

After which, 60 soldiers were commissioned to protect the fort until 1743, when it was finally abandoned after a local warrior, Panglima Kulub, and his followers attacked it. Later in 1973, the National Museum undertook its reconstruction to restore as much as possible the remains of the fort for the benefit of tourists. Located at Teluk Gedung village, slightly south of Pulau Pangkor. Just ask the village folks for directions and they will be just too glad to oblige.
